The Declaration of Independence gives out a false representation of what “American values” are all about. The values of the Declaration of Independence are what Jefferson states as, “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” (Jefferson, pg 443). The values of the Declaration of Independence are completely hypocritical because it only gave power to White men, there were still slaves owned by White men, and in addition it gave the right for men to legally own women. We should not embrace these values because it gives a false narrative on what actually happened and what is still happening in America.
